The Moremi Game Reserve is a very special wildlife sanctuary on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta. It was established in 1965 by the BaTawana people under Chief Moremi to protect the wildlife from hunters. After several extensions the reserve now covers just under 5000 sq km. The diversity of wildlife is impressive: elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena, jackal, giraffe, baboons and vervet monkeys as well as many antelope species, including the endemic Red Lechwe. In fact the wide variety of habitats supports one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife on the continent – in addition to some 500 bird species.
The landscape is just as diverse. The combination of Mopane woodland, acacia forests, open grassland, floodplains and lagoons make Moremi the most beautiful wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The best time to visit is the dry season from July to October. Moremi is 4×4 country only, and the closest petrol station is in Maun, 100 km from the reserve’s south gate.
